ABSTRACT: The purpose of the work was to compare two different novel characters in order to depict and make us better understand the common opinion of a woman's position in the nineteenth century English society. A woman's role in her social environment , her feelings about it as well as a woman’s education question mirrored themselves in some of the best Englsih novels of the time. Elizabeth Bennet and Lucy Snow were such new individuals who dared to step forward and proclaimed some fresh ideas starting from women’s emancipation at the beginning of the century and leading to feminism during Victorian era. The works were reviewed taking into consideration the historical moment writers were born in, their age and family relationships, social environment and its important changes as well as the heroines’ natural intelligence and education.Different resources such as: books, newspaper’s articles, letters, literary rewievs, films and radio programmes were used to describe the women as objectively as possible.
